For the ‘Operating Room Centre of the Future’ project at Leiden University Medical Center in Leiden, Dijkstaal B.V., commissioned by DuPrie Bouw & Ontwikkeling, provided the steel structure for a special walkway connecting two operating room areas.
During construction, this connection plays an important role in the logistical transport between the different parts of the operating room centre. Once the project is completed, the walkway will be used for the safe transport of patients. This means that the steel structure not only serves a structural purpose, but also literally contributes to better connections within healthcare.
Working at a location such as LUMC requires a careful approach. The hospital’s daily operations had to continue as much as possible during the work. Thorough preparation, good coordination between all parties involved, and safe and precise execution were therefore essential.
The steel structure, with a total weight of approximately 10,000 kg, was produced and prepared at our production facility in Maassluis. By carrying out as much work as possible in advance, the components could be assembled efficiently and precisely on site. We carried out the installation in collaboration with Berghoff and the team from DuPrie Bouw & Ontwikkeling.
An important point of attention within the project was connecting the new steel structure to the existing building. Combined with the limited accessibility, the lifting operation, and the schedule, this required a customised technical solution and thorough preparation. Every step had to be carefully coordinated in advance to ensure that the structure could be safely positioned according to schedule.
This project is a great example of how technology, craftsmanship, and collaboration come together within a complex environment. A special steel structure in a special location, where steel literally creates a connection.
