For the extension, refurbishment and renovation of Fort de Gagel in Utrecht, we supplied approximately 66 tonnes of structural steel on behalf of Aannemingsbedrijf Nico de Bont B.V.
Fort de Gagel is part of the New Dutch Waterline and has a history spanning more than 200 years. During the redevelopment of this remarkable location, preserving its monumental character was a key priority, while at the same time preparing the fort for a new future.
The existing fort was restored, and behind the existing barracks, a new hospitality venue was created, among other additions. The new extension consists of a concrete structure supported by a steel frame. The new section has been carefully integrated into the existing surroundings and the historic character of the fort.
In addition, a new entrance was constructed between the existing guardhouse and the barracks. Here too, a steel frame forms the basis of the structure. Connecting the new steelwork to the existing listed structure required precise preparation and close coordination between all parties involved.
Our scope included approximately 66,000 kg of structural steel, the steel structure for the new extension and the steel frame for the new entrance. Production and preparation took place at our production facility in Maassluis, after which the steel structures were installed on site in Utrecht.
Especially with a listed national monument such as Fort de Gagel, the challenge lies in finding the right balance between preservation and renewal. New structures must be technically sound while also integrating carefully with what has already stood there for more than a century.
The result is a remarkable transformation project in which history, redevelopment and modern engineering come together. With the new steel structures, an important foundation has been created for the new purpose of Fort de Gagel, while preserving the character and history of this unique location.
