Work Dijkstaal: The production and delivery of a three-dimensional roof structure with a total steel weight of 80 tons for a large glass atrium roof of approximately 1,100m².
The steel structure consists entirely of hot-formed tubes 200x100x8, 250x100x10 in S355 quality, which we made to measure by sawing or (laser) cutting.
Composite frames were welded from these tubes and the entire atrium roof was fitted in our production before it was preserved to ensure that the assembly on location (in Ireland) would proceed smoothly.
The entire steelwork was provided with a 2-layer architectural powder coating.
We like to do these types of projects where high demands are placed on dimensions, tolerances and finishing.
This is what our customer Octatube writes about this unique project:
“Blackrock is a suburb of the Irish capital Dublin. Just off the main shopping street of Blackrock is Blackrock Shopping Centre, a shopping centre built in 1984 that is being renovated and redeveloped over the course of 2019 and 2020. Octatube was appointed as Design & Build partner for the glass and steel canopy, designed by Lafferty Architects.
The renovation includes a modernisation of the communal areas and an extension of the square metres. One of the most striking interventions is in the existing courtyard of the shopping centre. This space is covered with a gridshell roof of glass and steel.
The canopy surface is flat and the structure is large with limited connection points: the three columns and the edge beam. It was a structural challenge to bridge the large spans between the supports, especially given the additional weight that would be added by the glass."
